Smart Packing Tips for your Utah Camping Trip

July 5th, 2010 · No Comments · Camping in Utah

Some campers enjoy packing as much as the vacation itself. Others, meanwhile, dread this chore and cannot help but wish that their bags can magically stuff themselves with things. If you are going to Utah for a relaxing camping vacation, packing is also one of those things that you need to do. Whether you are the type who enjoys it or not, here are some smart packing tips that will ensure that you do not miss anything important and that you will not have a hard time bringing your luggage.

Make a comprehensive packing list

First, you need to make a comprehensive packing checklist that enumerates everything that you have to bring. This is important so you get an overview of the things you will bringing and you can easily determine if you are under packing or over packing, and make the necessary adjustments to achieve something in between. Some of the most important camping equipment you will be bringing are the following:

Shelter and sleeping provisions – family camping tents, stake poles, ground cloth, tarps, sleeping bags or airbeds, pillows, sheets, and blankets.

Utility – lantern with fuel or batteries, flashlights, extra bulbs, batteries, bungee cords, duct tape, Swiss army knife, map, compass, nylon, scissors, rope, and whistle.

Cooking and eating utensils – Coleman grill, camping stove and fuel, cooler with ice, thermos, can/bottle opener, spatula, forks and spoons, knives, plates, bowls, mugs, cups, aluminum foil, zip lock bags, trash bags, paper towels, pot holders, kettle, pots with lids, frying pan, cutting board, and biodegradable antibacterial dishwashing soap.

Personal hygiene – bath soap, shampoo, towel, toilet paper, brush, bath towel, washcloth, small mirror, and toiletries.

First aid/safety – Snake bite kit, bear spray, water filter, bug spray, calamine lotion, lip balm, rubbing alcohol, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, instant cold pack, eye wash, safety pins, hydrocortisone, tweezers, gauze pads, antibiotic ointment and wipes,

Gadgets – Cell phone, binoculars, camera, video camera, and GPS.

Maximize use of space

Since you cannot bring too many huge bags with you (or else risk having a backache), you need to maximize the space so you will be able to put everything you need into your luggage.

  • Roll up clothes instead of folding them – This can save extra space. Not to mention, it is easier to squeeze and pack compactly rolled clothes into your bag.
  • Transfer amounts of supplies to smaller containers – You do not need to bring that large bottle of shampoo to your overnight camping trip in Utah. You only need to bring an amount sufficient for a day or two.
  • Use zip lock bags – Ziploc bags are great for many purposes. Unlike other hard plastic containers, they can easily roll up into one small roll that will not take up much space in your bag.
  • Bring items that serve double/multiple purposes – One good example would be the utility knife, which is a bottle opener, knife, screw and so many more in one small package.
  • Bring pocket sized versions of items – Bring items that come in small sizes or can fold up to a compact size.

Packing for your Utah camping trip is an important task that you need to do in order for you to have a fun, safe, and comfortable camping experience.
